Keyboard Skills Course

You’re already learning the technical aspects of music production - so don’t neglect the creative side. If you learn how to play basic keyboards you will be able to not only make a better standard of tune but you won’t be reliant purely on samples or other session players to make your music sound excellent. All styles welcome including house/dance to hip hop/r&b to rock to drum & bass.

Introduction The benefits of improving your keyboard skills; raising your game; finishing tunes; being self reliant; not relying on samples exclusively; achieving better results in the production style of your choice from house/dance to hip hop/r&b to rock to drum & bass.
Finding Your Way Around the Keyboard Introduces the notes of the keyboard and explains hand positions and keyboard posture. Names of the notes in the treble and bass clef are explained. C major five finger exercises are introduced for both hands. Basic useful chord progressions are explored.
Exercises and Rhythms This lecture introduces basic five finger techniques in C and G major.
Popular tunes are explored. Keyboard chords and rhythms used in house music and drum and bass are also explored.
The Major Scale This lecture introduces the concept and usefulness of the major scale. One octave fingering of the C scale is explained for both hands. Basic rhythm reading is also explore. This lecture continues to explore the fingering of major scales in both hands. Useful chord progressions used in rock music are introduced. Basic rhythm reading is further explored
The Minor Scales Basic chord symbols. This lecture explores the fingering of the A minor scales and exercises in both hands. Basic chord symbols are introduced. Introduction of project set pieces eg ‘Summertime’.
Arpeggios This lecture explores arpeggio technique. Study of project set piece. Contrary motion.
Chord Symbols Part 1 This lecture explores arpeggio technique.Reading and construction of pop harmony using basic chords.Symbols and improvisation. Study of project set piece.
Chord Symbols Part 2 This lecture continues the theme of the understanding and performance of chord symbols within jazz and pop. Smooth voice leading is further explored. Study of project set piece
The Blues Scales The aim of this lecture is to explain the finger techniques
and practical uses of the blues scales.
