The main purpose of an equaliser (“EQ”) is to add or remove parts of the sound to either cure some problem or to make it sound different in some way. An EQ has one set of controls that allow you to choose the part of the sound (the “frequency”, such as low, mid or high) and another set of controls to add or take away that part of the sound.
On the DFX, there is one control for each low, mid and high, and you only have to turn each frequency up or down to get more or less of that part of the sound in that channel. The simplest and probably most effective EQ trick is “cutting the bass”. Just turn down the bass frequencies (the “low” control) for the length of one phrase or for a couple of bars at the end of a phrase, and then bring it to the middle to slam it back in at the beginning of the next phrase.
