“Effects” means anything that the DJ does to change the sound of the tune, including Delay, Reverb, Phasing, Flanging, Panning and EQ.

The most common effect is Delay, which is often called “echo”.

The most common effect is Delay, which is often called “echo”. Basically, it just means an automatic repeat of the sound very soon – usually less than a second – after the original sound is heard. By adding this fast (and relatively quiet) repeat, a dramatic change can happen to the sound of the tune. Some delay effects are easily recognised (such as the “slapback” delay that is associated with Reggae music) while shorter delay times create less obvious effects. The only thing for it is experimentation.

Reverb, unlike delay, is a muddy effect that makes the music sound like it’s happening in a big room or concert hall, and is not usually used by DJs. Phasing and Flanging are psychedelic effects that make the music sound like it’s being heard through a long tunnel or from outer space
