“Acapella mixing” means beat mixing an acapella (vocals only) tune over a different (usually instrumental) tune. With “acapella mixing”, the DJ makes a whole new tune – created by him as he mixes it.
The hardest part is to find two tunes that work together well. The tunes need to be close enough in tempo that the pitch shifting doesn’t turn the acapella singer into Mickey Mouse (too fast) or Darth Vader (too slow), and they need to be musically similar so that the combination doesn’t hurt your ear. A good match is a pretty rare thing so, when you’re starting out, just choose any two tunes that seem to be in roughly the same tempo. Start by playing the backing tune and do as well as you can to beat match the acapella against it.
