A “Sampler” is a digital recording machine that records a bit of a tune (or any sound) which can then be played back and manipulated. Studio musicians use samplers as keyboard instruments to make completely new records.

A sample can be as short and small as a quick blast of a trumpet or a hit of a drum, but it might also be as long as an 8-bar phrase of a tune.

Vinyl DJs often use a sampler box as part of their set-up, but they have to learn how to use whatever sampler they buy and plug it in to a separate channel on their mixer.

Like acapella mixing, the trick to using samples and loops is to think of a good combination: the sample or loop needs to fit well with the tune that is mixed over. If the tempo or the musical key is too different, it can easily sound like a mess.
