By far the most important thing that separates a good DJ from a bad one is the music he chooses. A good DJ knows the best tunes and – just as important – when to play them.

He can “read” an audience to tell when they like a record (so when they don’t, he changes it fast) and he knows when to crank it up and when to slow things down for a rest. There are many, many different styles and genres of Dance music and ones are being born all the time. Even if you feel dead certain of your life-long dedication to a particular kind of music, there’s no harm in checking out new music that you might find interesting (and may find that you wish to experiment with). Virtually every DJ will improve his own mixing and become a better DJ from increasing his awareness of other music.

Of course, the more you practice the better you get, but the most important ingredient is fun.

And if you aren’t having fun, you aren’t doing it right. So get practicing and have fun. Get DJing.
